Wetland Creation
The creation of wetlands is a very useful component of Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) resulting in attractive landscapes that;
- have ecological value, directly increasing the numbers of fish, frog, bird and other animals
- improve water quality, enhancing the health of rivers and marine waters
- retain water, reducing peak flows in urban waterways and allowing more natural vegetation to survive in riparian zones
- provide for connectivity between different habitat types
- have great aesthetic value, enhancing feelings of well-being and the value of neighbouring property!
In order to provide for all of the above values wetlands must be carefully designed and constructed. Wetlands are best designed and constructed in light of information about other ecological values in the area, and water sensitive urban design should be integrated with other ecological objectives.
